Date and Location of Meeting:
October 9, 2006, 9 AM at Turnbull Law
Office, P.C., 200 E. High St., Jefferson City, MO 65101
3.
Minutes from meeting of September 11, 2006:
Reg reviewed the minutes and asked for
motion to approve. Dean moved to approve the minutes and Carrie
seconded. Minutes were approved.
4.
Old Business:
a.
Recycling Rechargeable Batteries:
Carrie said that Kathy Crow is now the
contact person at Central Bank. Central Bank will place a
container in their Main Bank, Motor Bank and West Bank. Each
container is for rechargeable batteries and cell phones.
Rechargeable batteries could originate from electronic
equipment, power tools, cell phones, cameras, and other
equipment.
b.
Posters:
Reg had updated the posters based on
comments from the September 11, 2006, meeting and gave a copy to
each member. The committee then discussed the revised poster.
Reg will add a website address and a recycle icon. Reg will
print about 50 copies and request that the Downtown Jefferson
City distribute them to their members. Reg also said that he
will send copies to law firms that are not members of Downtown
Jefferson City.
c.
Newspaper Articles:
Carrie shared two advertisements from the
News Tribune which notified subscribers of the containers
at 210 Monroe and 2130 Schotthill Woods Road for recycling
newspapers.
Carrie also complimented the News
Tribune for the articles about recycling.
d.
New World Recycling:
Carrie said that Aaron Verslues was not
able to attend the September 12, 2006, Downtown Jefferson City
meeting. Carrie said that she mentioned the services that New
World Recycling provides. She said Mr. Verslues will be asked
to attend another meeting.
e.
Grants:
Dean mentioned that the grant process had
begun by the City to acquire more recycling containers for the
City locations before he started in his current employment
position. He said that it is 75/25 match.
Carrie noted that a grant is something the
recycling committee had thought about in the past. Ideally they
would use the grant to install multiple containers downtown for
the collection of plastics and materials other than newspapers
and cardboard.
5.
New Business:
a.
Florescent Lights:
Carrie discussed an announcement in the
paper about recycling florescent light bulbs. Dean thought that
the nearest site for collecting florescent bulbs was in
Columbia. Carrie mentioned the state law requirements about
recycling florescent bulbs and the entities that are exempt from
the recycling requirements.
Reg said that it would be helpful to have
a local collection site. Dean mentioned that large businesses
should have a method for recycling the bulb and might accept
ours or join in with a Downtown Association effort.
Carrie said that she would research the
issue of recycling florescent bulbs and report back to the
committee.
b.
Schools:
Dean discussed the amount of cardboard
schools generate. He thought that the involvement of schools in
recycling efforts would help educate their students on the
importance of recycling. Committee members mentioned David
Luther and Paula Hartsfield as persons who could be contacted.
c.
Current City Recycle Sites:
Dean said that the City has containers for
newspapers, magazines, and cardboard at Memorial Park (also a
container for recyclable plastic and aluminum cans), McKay Park,
Fire Station on Fairground Road, Fire Station on High Street,
and Fire Station on East McCarty. Reg noted that persons
sometimes will not put the recycling materials in the container
but put them on the ground. Dean stated that it is violation to
improperly dispose of waste.
Reg asked about creating a map to show
persons the recycling sites and mentioned Jim Dyke as a person
who might create the map.
Carrie said that she would contact Deanne
Fisher for ideas and ask Kris Hilgedick about an article
including a map.
d.
Habitat for Humanity Can Cottage:
Reg said that the can cottage is beginning
to look dilapidated again. He noted that some of trim is
falling off. Reg said that the cottage in a large parking lot
might not be bad, but it is an eyesore on the busy sidewalk
across from our State Capitol. Dean said that Habitat for
Humanity has been very conscientious about keeping the grounds
of their sponsored homes in good condition. Dean said that he
would contact them about the can cottage.
e.
Adding Person to get Monthly Minutes:
It was decided to add Steve Picker to the
list of persons who receive the monthly committee minutes via
email so he could post the minutes on the Downtown Association
website. Carrie said that she would send the email address to
Lee.
The next meeting of
the committee is scheduled for November 13, 2006, at 9 AM at
Turnbull Law Office, P.C., 200 East High St. Jefferson City, MO
65101.
