The Downtown Jefferson Association is proud to be doing their part by offering  a Recycling Program.

The Association encourages everyone to recycle cardboard, aluminum cans (to benefit our local Habitat for Humanity) and soon rechargeable batteries.

Recycling Committee Minutes

 

1.      Members attending:

2.      Date and Location of Meeting: 

September 11, 2006, 9 AM at Turnbull Law Office, P.C., 200 E. High St., Jefferson City, MO 65101

3.      Minutes from meeting of August 14, 2006: 

Reg reviewed the minutes and asked for motion to approve.  Dean moved to approve the minutes and Carrie seconded.  Minutes were approved.  

4.      Old Business:    

a.       Recycling Rechargeable Batteries: 

Carrie said that Central Bank will place a container for recycling rechargeable batteries.

b.      Posters: 

Draft posters were emailed to members for their review and comments.  Members agreed on which poster to use and offered a number of suggestions or changes to the selected poster.  The suggestions included adding the word “free”, web site links, and an earth outline picture.   

c.       Paper Recycling: 

Corey Toebben and Aaron Verslues discussed the services that New World Recycling provides.  It was noted that cardboard with a waxed surface should not be placed into the recycling dumpster marked for cardboard.  

d.      Newspaper Articles: 

Kris Hilgedick discussed the recycling articles that the News Tribune publishes.  Kris said that the paper will print occasional recycling tips.  The articles may be about six paragraphs in length.  Kris said that she has about 30 topics in mind.   

Carrie mentioned that the newspaper articles could encourage persons to recycle.  Members discussed the idea that it helps to encourage persons to recycle. 

Reg asked if members should contact Kris regarding articles.  Kris said to email her at khil@newstribune.com.  Kris said that the newspaper’s deadline is Wednesday.  Jennifer mentioned that New World Recycling may have helpful information—Corey said to email him at newworldrecycling@hotmail.com. 

Kris asked for ideas for the weekend edition.  Carrie suggested the topic, “Why should we recycle.”    

5.      New Business: 

a.       New World Recycling:  

Corey Toebben, Owner/President, of and Aaron Verslues, General Manager, of New World Recycling attended the meeting.  New World Recycling charges businesses for providing a container for the collection of paper for recycling.  Aaron noted that they would also pickup plastic at the same time that they pick up the paper.   

New World Recycling also has a receptacle at Memorial Park for the collection of plastic.  Aaron said that they have a container at the shop for shredding for a flat rate of $10.00 for up to 100 pounds and then .10 cents per pound for amounts over 100 pounds.   

Corey said that the News Tribune could add him as a contact person.   

Carrie suggested that Corey and Aaron attend the next Downtown Jefferson City meeting to explain their company’s services and provide brochures.  Reg mentioned about contacting Colleen to have Corey and Aaron added to the agenda.  Carrie said that she would contact Colleen.  

b.      Trash Collection and Recycling: 

Dean noted that Allied Waste is willing to work with the city regarding trash and yard waste.  Dean noted that the city does not have a mandatory participation policy. Dean thought that it would help if the city had mandatory participation. Dean also mentioned that the city is trying to get a grant to purchase 5 new 30 yard bins. 

Kris mentioned that many persons are unaware of the recycling container for plastic. 

Reg asked Corey about recycling phone books.  Corey said that they had stopped taking phone books, but the company is looking for a market for them.  

The topic of recycling books came up during the meeting.  Corey said that Capital Projects will cut and dispose of the bindings for a charge.  He suggested that anyone interested in the service should contact Rich Bax.  

c.       Add New Councilman: 

Carrie suggested that Councilman Peter Oetting be added to the list of person to get a copy of the minutes.  

The next meeting of the committee is scheduled for October 9, 2006, at 9 AM at Turnbull Law Office, P.C., 200 East High St. Jefferson City, MO 65101.
